SUMMER SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE

WHAT IS THE SUMMER SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE?

A full emergance into the process of working on a play and learning Shakespeare. Our summer intensive is truly intensive. In addition to a one or two week rehearsal /performance process we use preparation session workshops in the months leading up to the Intensive to encourage the young actor in feeling fully prepared to enter into the rehearsal process. These sessions allow each student more time with their roles for learning and understanding the language, and build the group dynamicsthat are so essential for personal and group success.

Working on a Shakespeare play should be a fearless and joyful experience.

Understanding that Shakespeare wrote about the human experience we believe one can find connections to our modern world through the plays of Shakespeare. Knowing how Shakespeare’s words come from the emotion and circumstances of a particular character makes a greater understanding of oneself and our world clear. Once it makes sense and connections are made with an emotional understanding there is the joy in living as that character. The language supports and transports us to a different world that is in turn, our own world. The experience lends to new perspectives on ourselves and our community.

THE PROCESS

Each session begins with a warm-up that provides tools to build and strengthen the actor’s instrument. Group work and individual coaching lend understandings of character, language, and personal commitment to the role. It is important that each actor involve themselves with the emotional and physical life of their character, making their portrayal personal and unique. Read more about the Rehearsal Process...
